The aim of this post is to share the writing setup I came up with. in plain text (markdown is even better).centralised (to find everything quickly). On top of that, I am a plain text lover (fast, light and not compatibility issues). This is important, as I want my different project folders to be complete and contains everything related to the project. I also like to keep my folders well organised (by projects / experiments / …). As a consequence, I need the right tools to write, organise and find all these document. So if you are looking for an a lightweight plain text, open source, note-taking app, then FSNotes is worth a peek.As I scientist, I write a lot and in various ways. Having said all that, I have recently been made aware of another Notational Velocity clone out there that is in active development. Second, even if there were significant changes, this is the beauty of plain text, moving to another app will not break your system. To which I would suggest that first, I can’t imagine Bitwriter will depart from the nvALT workflow much at all – the user base for Bitwriter are nvALT users, so moving to the new app will be trivial when it happens. You might wonder why I would recommend an app kept in the barest of maintenance cycles while the developer openly builds its replacement. When it comes to capturing text as quickly as possible on the Mac, I have a hotkey set for nvALT, so it has become so ingrained that it just happens. OR if you would prefer you can synchronise it with another stalwart app, the minimalist and reliable Simplenote. The official stamp of approval for an iOS companion was given to 1Writer, another app I have no hesitation recommending, and one that includes a Javascript automation enginE. You can use nvALT wit any iOS text editor you choose as a companion, just set the default folder inside nvALT to your favourite cloud service and sync between the two apps. Brett Terpstra is promising a commercial replacement to nvALT, with an app called BitWriter apparently close to beta release. Nerds might roll their eyes – a detour through the history and utility of nvALT would be an undertaking of its own – but nvALT remains as useful as ever, despite being eclipsed by a new wave of notes apps in the past couple of years. nvALT was tool of choice for quick text capture where keyboard ninjas were concerned. Where haste is concerned, for a long time there was a pretty clear favourite among the mac community. Which brings me back to the aforementioned problem. Plain text also has one more significant advantage, the speed at which you can work with it. For that reason, I find myself only using Apple Notes as a kind of place holder for links I will use immediately, or when very basic collaboration is in order.Ī plain text system is the antithesis of proprietary, it is as open as you can get for storing text. Rich text relies on a proprietary database, meaning portability and future-proofing are open questions for notes kept in a system that relies on them. This rich text approach is both the major strength and weakness of Apple Notes, at least now that iCloud syncing has become so reliable and fast. The Apple Notes share extension captures URLs in a form it calls rich links, which includes a thumbnail and text snippet to make captured links that much easier to recall. Apple Notes, for example, has some hard to overlook advantages – native integration means an unparalleled user experience when it comes to sharing material with the system-wide share extension on both the macOS and iOS. There are trade offs no matter which way you look at it. The real problem is not so much being torn between numerous different tools, but being torn between waiting on an old favourite to be reincarnated, so to speak, and moving on to something new. If you happened to have read any of the posts I have made about note-taking, you might think I have a problem. The only time I use the electronic shutter function is when I know I have to be quiet, for instance, during a piano performance. The fact of the matter is, even though I have a mirrorless camera, I probably use my mechanical shutter 98% of the time. “A life span of the camera could be affected by other devices apart from a shutter, for example, the parts that require mechanical movement, such as a release button.” Masami Takase, Director, Imaging Product Development for Olympus. “A mechanical shutter count life span does matter with mirrorless cameras as well,” said Mr. That said, shutter count does still matter somewhat.Īnd, just to be sure, I asked the Olympus for confirmation of this. You’ll essentially find a longer life span. ![]() But the other thing to keep in mind is, because there’s no mirror to flip up and down, shutter count does not matter as much on mirrorless cameras. When you use the electronic shutter, it doesn’t impact this number. Having a high shutter count could, in turn, lower the value of your camera - unless you replace the shutter. This matters because mechanical shutters are rated for a certain number (usually around the 200,000 to 400,000 mark) before they start to fail. In layman’s terms, this is how many clicks you’ve made on your camera. If you’ve ever sold a camera, you’ve undoubtedly been asked how many actuations the shutter has on it. Does shutter count matter for mirrorless cameras like Olympus? What about shutter count? That’s why mirrorless cameras have the option of both. With mechanical shutters, these problems disappear, but of course, you don’t get some of the benefits that electronic shutters have. You also can experience things like banding in your images due to the light source in the room. Traditionally you’re limited in terms of using things like strobes and speedlights. Well, while electronic shutters are great, they can only do so much. And while mirrorless cameras do have an electronic shutter, they also have the more traditional mechanical shutter. After all, a lot of the benefits to mirrorless cameras include things like silent mode, and an ultrafast frame rate. There’s a common misconception that mirrorless cameras only have an electronic shutter. Namely, whether or not things like shutter count actually matters on mirrorless cameras. But with its popularity, there is still some confusion about the bones of a mirrorless camera. While it started with Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji, Canon and Nikon finally joined the game in late 2018. Mirrorless cameras are all the rage these days. ![]() ![]() ![]() This year, Samsung announced that it would stop manufacturing hardware and double down on their new platform and its integration with other device manufacturers. The purpose of automation is to make things easier when I walk into the house expecting the lights to go on and they don't, it makes me less trusting the next time I need that automation. As mentioned in an earlier post, an unreliable automation is often worse than no automation at all. If your internet is down or Samsung’s cloud is slow, automations might be slow to activate or simply not run at all. However, the flip side of that coin is that your remote automations are… remote. This gave rise to automation systems like WebCore which gives SmartThings a program-like interface for defining automations and flows. This means developers have nearly unlimited computing power at their disposal for running automations. However, all automations and custom code are stored and run in Samsung’s cloud.
